Notes

I found this one on my last trip to the US while hunting for new beers. The unpretentious little can caught my eye: nothing fancy, muted colours, and certainly not one I’d seen before.

Back at the hotel, I waited for it to cool down, grabbed whatever glass I could find in the room, and proceeded with the usual shenanigans…

Yes, I know this beer deserved a better glass. My apologies to both the reader and the people at Great Divide.

The first thing I noticed was that it had a less pronounced Imperial Stout aroma than I expected. I’m not entirely sure how to describe it, but it lacked some of that classic dry, roasty smell I normally associate with non-pastry impy stouts.

Medium carbonation produced a nice head, but it settled fairly quickly. This isn’t flat, nor is it mega fizzy, and it’s certainly not a thick syrupy beer. In fact, I found it surprisingly light.

This is a very nice Imperial Stout. I’d put it a notch below Old Rasputin in terms of bitterness, and certainly less aggressive than some of the chocolate or coffee impy stouts. Perhaps because of that, I found the alcohol slightly more noticeable than in those beers.

All in all, this should be near the top of your list if you’re looking for a properly executed Imperial Stout: dry, roasty, and thoroughly enjoyable.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if I had to choose between this, an Old Rasputin, or a Ten Fidy…

No… just drink a different one each week.
